Transfemoral catheterization of the cavernous sinus outflow with comparison of “central” and “peripheral” gonadotropin patterns in bonnet monkeys

Concentrations of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) in central (C) samples obtained by transfemorally catheterizing the inferior petrosal sinus of female bonnet monkeys were compared with those in peripheral (P) samples obtained simultaneously from the saphenous veins of two intact and two oophorectomized bonnet monkeys, before, during, and after luteinizing hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) stimulation. Significant differences between central and peripheral gonadotropin concentrations were detected intermittently in the resting state, and tended to be magnified by LHRH administration. In one animal in which LHRH was fortuitously administered during the course of a spontaneous LH surge, a C/P ratio for LH of 12.71, the maximum observed, was obtained. Spectral analysis exhibited periodicity for LH and, to a lesser extent, for FSH in the oophorectomized, but not in the intact, animals.     

Fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET)-based subcellular visualization of pathogen-induced host receptor signaling

Background  

Bacteria-triggered signaling events in infected host cells are key elements in shaping the host response to pathogens. Within the eukaryotic cell, signaling complexes are spatially organized. However, the investigation of protein-protein interactions triggered by bacterial infection in the cellular context is technically challenging. Here, we provide a methodological approach to exploit fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) to visualize pathogen-initiated signaling events in human cells.

The large-sample relative efficiency of the Mantel-Haenszel estimator in the fixed-strata case

The large-sample relative efficiency of the Mantel-Haenszel estimator psi MH of an odds ratio is investigated for the case in which the number of strata is fixed and the sample sizes within each stratum increase indefinitely. The results show that psi MH is very efficient over a wide range of designs likely to occur in practice. However, conditions are identified under which the relative efficiency of this widely used estimator can be unusually low.

An inversely correlated 1H/13C NMR spectrum defined the amino sugars acylated by acetyl or 3-hydroxybutyryl groups and revealed partial sequences and glycosylation sites in a tetrasaccharide repeating unit of the title polysaccharide, (----2DGlc alpha 1----3DGlcNAcyl alpha 1----4DGalNAc alpha 1----3DGalNAc beta 1----)n, where Acyl = 3-hydroxybutyryl.
